Marmaris Castle

Want to know everything about the history of the city of Marmaris? Then you just have to climb the walls of this castle. No one can say when Marmaris was founded: they say that before it was Fiscos, which dates back to the 6th century BC. But there is another point of view - that the city was created here as early as 3400 BC.

Even during the #Ottoman Empire, Suleiman the Magnificent chose #Marmaris as his headquarters for an attack on the Greek island of #Rhodes. In the 15th century, he ordered that a castle be built here, erected in 1522.

The favorable location of Marmaris failed to affect the growing interest of both #Turkish and #Greek troops: During the Ottoman Empire, Suleiman the Magnificent chose Marmaris as his headquarters for an attack on the Greek island of Rhodes. In the 15th century, he ordered that a castle be built here, erected in 1522.

There are two legends about the construction of Marmaris castle. One relates to the fact that during the construction process, Solomon came to see how the defensive structure was built. He didn't like what he saw and therefore said "hang the architect" - hang the architect. Its name is said to come from here. A less bloody version is that the city's name derives from Le Mar Maris, which translates as "pearl of the sea".

Marmaris Castle

Marmaris castle remained untouched until World War II. But it was bombed during the hostilities, and only in 1990 a museum was opened here. The exhibition describes the history of the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine city. Ancient amphorae, clay lamps, coins, figurines - in general there are materials from archaeological excavations in the city itself. The Ottoman Empire does not lag behind: story 14.-15. about the centuries. There is a story about Suleiman and Roksolana, a Ukrainian woman who became his wife.
